    SHUTCM Shanghai Government Scholarships


    Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine’s ‘Shanghai Government Scholarships for International Students’ (hereinafter referred to as “Scholarship”) is provided to excellent international students who come to the University for study in order to implement the Studying in China Plan and Outline of Shanghai’s Plan for Medium and Long-term Education Reform and Development (2010 to 2020), cater to Shanghai’s demand in international talents that accelerate to build Shanghai into a scientific and technological center with global influences, further boost the international cooperation and exchange of Shanghai education, promote the development of international student education undertaking, and provide financial aid to excellent students from all over the world to come to Shanghai for study and research. The regulations for the applicants, application formats, procedures and conditions for class A scholarship and class B scholarship by students attending preparatory courses, bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and doctor’s degree programs are as follows:


    1. Funding targets and duration


    1.1 Excellent students in the bachelor’s degree, with duration of 4 to 5 academic years (5 academic years for medical majors such as TCM and acupuncture and moxibustion, and 4 academic years for science of Chinese materia medica and rehabilitation therapeutics);


    1.2 Excellent students in the master’s degree, with duration of 3 academic years;


    1.3 Excellent students in the doctor’s degree, with duration of 3 academic years;


    1.4 Excellent students in the preparatory program, with duration of 1 academic year.


    2. Eligibility criteria


    2.1 Requirements on the education background and age of applicants


    2.1.1 Students applying for a bachelor’s degree program shall be of an education background of high school or above, aged not more than 25 years old in principle; students applying for a master degree shall be of an education background of master degree program or above, and aged not more than 35 years old in principle; students applying for a PHD program shall be of an education background of master degree or above, and aged not more than 40 years old.


    2.1.2 Students applying for a preparatory program shall be of an education background of high school or above, eligible for the enrollment by the University, and be aged not more than 23 years old.


    2.2 Requirements for language proficiency


    Applicants shall reach the requirements for the language proficiency as required bythe corresponding majors. The requirement for the bachelor’s degree and preparatory programs is a level equivalent to new HSK Level 3.


    2.3 Applicants who have received financial support from the government of China or other organizations are not eligible for ‘Shanghai Government Scholarships for International Students’of SHUTCM.


    3. Contents and standards of scholarship


    The standards of scholarship for students attending preparatory, bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and doctor’s degree programs are established according to Regulathons on Shanghai Government Scholarships for International Students:

    Scholarship of class A covers tuition (excludes thesis defense fee), basic accommodation for schooling period (a bed in a double room) and comprehensive medical insurance, and stipend for living on a monthly basis.


    Scholarship of class B covers tuition (excludes thesis defense fee) and comprehensive medical insurance.


    The criteria of class A scholarship for students attending bachelor’s degree program shall be applied to applicants attending preparatory program


    4. Application for scholarships


    4.1 Application route


    Log in www.study-shanghai.org, and complete the application according to the requirements.


    4.2 Application time


    The application time is generally set to be February to April each year.


    4.3 Application materials (the application materials submitted by the applicants shall not be returned)


    4.3.1 Certificates for the highest diploma and transcripts; in case that an applicant is an on-campus student, he/she needs to additionally provide the “certificate for pre-graduation” issued by his/her school;


    4.3.2 Plan for study or research in China (including personal statement; students taught in Chinese shall write in Chinese, and students taught in English shall write in English; the number of characters (words) is required to be over 1000);


    4.3.3 Letter of recommendation;


    4.3.4 Chinese Language Proficiency Test (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi, HSK) results (optional for overseas Chinese).


    5. Appraisal and finalization


    5.1 Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine’s evaluation group for ‘Shanghai government scholarships for international students’ shall be made responsible for review of qualifications, conditions and other materials of applicants. Scholarship evaluation results will be made public on the university’s website at the right time.


    5.2 The applicants enrolled by the university as students enjoying Shanghai Government Scholarship for International Students of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (hereinafter referred to as “scholarship students”) can come to the university funded by the scholarship;


    5.3 Letter of Admission, Notice of Scholarship and Visa Application for Study in China (JW202) will be sent to the applicant, subject to the enrollment progress of the university.


    5.4 Scholarship winners who have completed preparatory program for undergraduate study and continue studying for a bachelor’s degree must be recommended by Shanghai International Foundation College in the first school year and pass the review of SHUTCM’s evaluation group of Shanghai Government Scholarship for International Students.


    6. Annual appraisal


    The university will conduct comprehensive review on scholarship winners’ academic records, learning attitudes, attendances, behaviors, rewards and penalties and report to Shanghai Municipal Education Commission. Those who pass the review are entitled to retain the next year’s scholarship from the next school year. Those who failed to pass the review will be suspended from scholarship from the next school year.


    6.1 In terms of class A or B scholarship winners studying for a master’s degree and doctor’s degree, the second graders’ review will be mainly conducted based on academic record of the first school year and performance at the university, while the third graders’ review will be mainly conducted based on mid-term evaluation results of the second school year and performance at university.


    6.2 Class A or B scholarship winners studying for a bachelor’s degree shall pass all the courses excluding selective courses such as enhancement Chinese language course and medical humanity course (hereinafter referred to as “all the courses”) in the previous school year with CAP of no less than 2.8. Only those passed the review are entitled to retain the next year’s scholarship.


    6.3 Class A scholarship students attending the bachelor’s degree program, if achieving a mean GPA of lower than 2.8 but not lower than 2.0 (qualified in tests for all the courses) after passing the appraisal, will only enjoy class B scholarship next year; such students may continue to enjoy class A scholarship if their mean GPA of all courses reaches all the requirements for class A scholarship during the appraisal at the next academic year, but in case of failure to satisfy the requirements, they shall still be rated as students qualified for class B scholarship.


    6.4 Students in any of the following situations will be disqualified from scholarship immediately:


    Violated laws and regulations in China, violated the university’s disciplines, rules and system, and received disciplinary actions;


    Failed to pass examinations of their courses;


    Failed to cooperate with the university in completing annual review of scholarship;


    6.5 The university will make public the results of scholarship review, which will be effective thereafter.


    7. Supplementary provisions


    This application regulation shall be subject to the interpretation of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine’s Tentative Measures for Application of ‘Shanghai Government Scholarships for International Students’ (Shang Zhong Yi [2017] GZ No.3) shall not prevail upon the issuance date hereof.
